===================== Installing NetConnect ===================== This is a quick guide to installing NetConnect onto your system. Even if you are an advanced user we would advise you to have a quick read of the following information! The installation process is very straightforward, don't worry! All you have to do is choose where you want to install NetConnect, where you live etc. All standard installation procedures. At this stage, if you are using a disk based version of NetConnect. make sure you use backup copies for installation. Keep your master copies in a safe place. We are assuming you are using the intermediate mode whilst installing NetConnect. 1 Open the Installer ==================== If you are using the floppy disk of NetConnect, insert NetConnect disk one and double-click the "Install_NetConnect" icon. If you are using the CD version insert the CD as normal and double-click on the CD icon and the "Install_NetConnect" icon will appear. When you click this icon a NetConnect install GUI will appear on your Workbench. This GUI will guide you through the process of installation. 2 Setting the Install Mode ========================== Before installation begins, you will be asked to specify your knowledge of the Amiga: * Intermediate * Expert Our advice is to select Intermediate mode. Most of the questions asked in Expert mode are trivial and do not alter your use of NetConnect. In fact, we would even recommend expert users to use the Intermediate installation. Click "proceed" to start the installation. 3 What Do You Want to Install? ============================== You will now be asked what sections do you want install. Leave all the boxes "checked" (ticked) and AmiTCP, NetConnect, MUI and provider profiles will be installed. 4 Where Do You Want to Install NetConnect? ========================================== The installer will ask you where you want to install NetConnect. Make sure the hard drive partition you want to install NetConnect contains more than 9MB of free space. A "NetConnect" drawer will be created on your hard drive. We recommend that you install to your work: or hd1: partition (ie. with a lot of space). NetConnect will be installed to this hard drive partition and copy some essential files to Workbench where needed. 5 Would You Like to Copy NetConnect to Your WBStartup Drawer? ============================================================= The NetConnect main executable (which is quite small incidentally) will be copied to your WBStartup drawer which means that the NetConnect icon bar is started when you boot your machine. It is advisable to select "yes" here. 6 Would You Like Your Old Preferences Copying? ============================================== You will be asked whether you want to copy the preferences from any demo versions of Microdot-II, Voyager etc. If you do, select "yes" and they will be copied to their new drawers. 7 Select The Country Where You Live =================================== Select your country of residence. The example image shows "United Kingdom" selected if a user lived in this country. This is needed so the installer knows which "Provider Profile" files to copy for your country. You can, of course, choose more than one country. 8 Your Information ================== Insert your name, organisation (if applicable) and serial number into the correct boxes when asked. You will find your unique serial code on the registration card your received with your software. If you find that you are presented with "bad serial code" (or something similar) please compare your unique serial code on your registration card to the one you inserted into the "Licence Code" box. Some people have problems with "I" (capital i) and mistake them for "l" (lowercase l). Insert this information slowly and carefully. 9 Where Do You Want to Install MUI? =================================== For users that selected the intermediate option, the installer will now ask you where you want to install MUI. Our advice is to install MUI within the NetConnect drawer - the default option is sys: ("sys:" which you will need to change 10 Configuring AmiTCP ===================== The installer will now ask you whether you want to install AmiTCP now or later. If your ISP is contained within the "ISP List" document, please configure AmiTCP now. If your ISP is not listed just press "NO" and proceed to the next option (see section within the NC documentation about what to do if your ISP is not contained within our list). If you press YES and choose to configure AmiTCP now follow these stages: 1. Go to the "provider" option in the prefs list. In the "provider" folder - a. choose your country (ie. United Kingdom) b. choose your provider (ie. Enterprise) c. choose your local phone number - this could be an 0345, 0645 or 0845 number (which are classed as local call numbers) or a number local to you (ie. if you live in Surrey you would be able to dial an 0181 number at local call rate). If you are unsure what is your local call number contact us or your ISP as soon as possible. Note that if the "Show Provider Info" box is clear you can click this to show some extra information about an ISP. 2. If you are connecting with an ISP that gives you a static IP address - Demon Internet do, but most every other ISP doesn't - goto the "configuration" folder - a. goto IP Address and insert your static IP address. This box will be *ghosted* if you do not have a static IP address. Your address should look similar to 159.151.5.13 3. Goto "User" in the prefs list. Within the "User Information" folder - a. insert your login name - this is the name you give the ISP when you contact them for the first time. b. insert your password - again, this is the password you give to your ISP when you first contact them. c. insert your Real Name and E-Mail address. Your email address will be something similar to loginname@enterprise.net or loginname@netcomuk.co.uk. 4. Goto "Modem" in the prefs list and select your modem. If your modem is not contained within this list select "Generic". Click "SAVE" to save the preferences. Now you have inserted all the information you need to run NetConnect. 11 Installation Complete! ========================= Once you have configured AmiTCP installation is completed. Now reboot your computer and you will be presented with an icon bar. Our advice is to read the NetConnect documentation before you use NetConnect.
